difference between alone and lone lonely

  • Lone and alone are closely synonymous; lone is usually used to describe a single participant in a situation such as a "lone gunman firing across the grassy knoll...". Alone is a state of being indicating that no one else is present. Lonely is a feeling (that may or may not indicate that there is no one else around). It is entirely possible to feel lonely in a crowded room. Get it?

  • Well, lone means that something is by itself. You often hear this word a lot in the news about when some person shot up a place "lone gunman". "Alone" you can hear as an adjective(she is alone), but sometimes as an adverb(She went alone). Lonely means that you're uncomfortable being by yourself and long for some sort of companionship.

  • Lone= without any other people or thing, single:
    A lone mother/ parent

    Alone=without any other people:
    He lives alone.
Finally the two of us were alone together.

Lonely= unhappy because you have no friends or people to talk to:
She lives alone and often feels lonely.

  • Lone is used as an adjective. "A lone bandit robbed the bank" This means a single bandit robbed the bank.
Lonely describes a feeling one has when one is someplace with no friends or family.
Alone also describes a condition, without an necessary implication as to feeling.
If I am alone, I simply have nobody else in the immediate area or supporting me. That does not necessarily mean that I feel lonely.
The three are certainly related, but have different implications and shades of meaning.

difference between alone and lonely

  • Loneliness is a state of mind - if you are feeling alone it means that, even if you are with other people, you are feeling lonely because you miss someone, Somehow, you feel empty inside.

On the other hand, the feeling of being alone is a state of being - if you are alone it means that you are without company.

You can feel lonely even when you are not alone and consequentially you feel alone because it is as if no one were with you, but indeed there are lots of people around you so you are lonely but not alone, definitely.

  • Being lonely is more of a state of mind. You may feel lonely and want the company of others. Being alone is simply that, being alone.

I like to be left alone at times, but I never want to be lonely. I don't want to think that there is no one I can tun to when I need someone.

Sometimes being lonely and being alone are things we chose to do. Some of us look around and don't see the love that's around them...they will feel lonely, but may not realize that they are not alone. Is any of this making sense?

You see, my brother just recently committed suicide because he said he was lonely. No one knew that he felt that way until it was too late. He was never alone, he just didn't notice that we were all here for him. That's my two cents, and I hope that you could understand what I was trying to say.

  • When you say that you are "alone" what you are implying is that there is no other person with you. For example, right now I am sitting all alone at my computer desk and typing away — there is no one else in the room. I am neither happy nor sad about it; as far as I am concerned, the fact that there is no one around is neither good nor bad. The word "lonely" on the other hand, refers to the state of the mind of an individual.                                                                                                                                         It suggests that the person is sad, feels unwanted, and is longing for companionship. The degree of sadness that the individual feels may vary. When one sits in a crowded room, one is not "alone", but one can still feel "lonely" because loneliness has nothing to do with physical proximity with other people. When one is "alone", one needn't feel lonely. Some people prefer to be alone.
