difference between loyal and faithful
- Faithful means you BELIEVE in someone or something. Like you have Faith that the war will end in Iraq---means you BELIEVE and have faith that it will end. Loyal means that the person or thing will always be there for you. An example: You can always rely on your friend to be there for you. Therefore, she is a loyal friend.......you can always count on her.
- At first glance, the two words seem to be the same thing. But, thinking about it, I think to be faithful is better. Because when you're faithful to someone or something, that tells me that you love that person or thing. when someone is loyal, well that doesn't really mean much. A wife can be loyal, as in she doesn't cheat on her husband, but that doesn't really tell me if she loves him. If she's faithful, that adds more of a loving element. A dog can be loyal, but only a human can be faithful.
- "He is faithful to his wife" has the narrower meaning that he does not have sex with other women, and, probably, that he doesn't form romantic attachments to other women. However, the second condition may not be true.
"He is loyal to his life" includes more. I think that he also is supportive of his wife in general, including that he respects her opinions, and helps her accomplish things she wants to do.
- They are synonyms, but I think the circumstances(нөхцөл байдал) in which they are used are different. Loyalty is an unswerving(тууштай) devotion(зүтгэл, үнэнч зан) to a person or a thing. In many ways, this can be positive, but it can also be negative. Stalkers(анчин) have a kind of loyalty mixed with dangerous behaviors. Faithfulness is steadfast(байнгийн) in allegiance(үнэнч байдал, баримтлал), or firm in adherence(мөрдөх, чанд сахих) to promises or in observance(журам, зан заншил) of duty. To me, this means doing things that you may not like in efforts to help someone who has earned your faithfulness. Loyalty shifts more than faithfulness in my experience. some would say that if it changes, then it really wasn't loyalty to begin with. Husbands and wives are supposed to be faithful to each other, even when times are tough. However, if they aren't faithful to each other, one of the partners has a newfound loyalty for someone else. This may be temporary, or passing, but faithfulness is forever.
