IS THERE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SPOT AND STAIN?

  • A "spot" is generally small (often circular) and localized. A "stain" can be much larger and irregularly shaped. But you could probably use them interchangeably in most cases.

  • A spot is a substance from a spill that is added to your carpet, usually darker in color than the carpet.  These usually are removed during the cleaning process.
A stain is a substance from a spill that either adds or removes color from you carpet. Stains sometimes can be removed with specialty spot removers, but not by the regular cleaning process.

  • Spots are created by something being dropped or spilt on the carpet. The substance does not have the ability to permanently bond to the fiber or cause damage to the fiber. Proper cleaning steps can completely remove the substance from the carpet.
Stains are created by something being dropped or spilt on a carpet, but the substance has the ability to permanently damage the carpet fiber. The substance permanently adds color to the carpet or the substance removes color from the carpet.
