difference between nevertheless and however and although

nevertheless - (nevertheless bit more formal and emphatic than however.) - гэсэн хэдий ч
however - (nevertheless bit more formal and emphatic than however.) - гэсэн ч
although - (used for introducing a statement that makes the main statement in a sentence seem surprising) - сан, сэн, сон, сун с гэсэн
-- Although the sun was shining, it wasn't very warm. - (нар ээж байсан ч          гэсэн дулаан биш байсан)

difference between nevertheless and however

(I have a very simple question, but nobody has been able to make it clear to me. I know that the words however and nevertheless are slightly different in meaning and use. I would much appreciate it if you could make the differences clear to me.)

  • We can use either of the adverbs however or nevertheless to indicate that the second point we wish to make contrasts with the first point. The difference is one of formality: neverthelessis bit more formal and emphatic than however. Consider the following:
----- I can understand everything you say about wanting to share a                       flat with Martha. However, I am totally against it.
----- Rufus had been living in the village of Edmonton for over a                           decade. Nevertheless, the villagers still considered him to be                       an outsider.

Note that however and nevertheless are normally placed in initial               position in a sentence when contrasting two ideas. They can, however,           also come in mid position or end position:
---- There will be no more pay increases this year. That is for sure.                      We have, however, agreed to carry out a full review of pay and                    conditions. We have agreed, nevertheless, to carry out a full                        review of pay and conditions.

----- He's still able to get around quite well.
His whole life has been plagued by illness, however.
His whole life has been plagued by illness, nevertheless

  • I don't think there is a difference. =)

  • never the less sounds more intellectual

  • Questions like this one are most interesting to me (special thanks to Tere). But I'm not sure if I grasped the difference of (or: in??) meaning properly. So please let me resume - just for the sake of both my comprehension and confirmation:

'Nevertheless' is used emphasizing or referring to the specific facts qouted in the immediately preceding sentence, while 'however' implies that there might be other circumstances in addition to these facts. Can I generalize this way?

Difference between the usage of 'although' and 'however'?

  • However is used as a transition into another paragraph or sentence and really does make people sound more articulate(сэтгэл санаагаа илэрхийлэх) when they use it. Although would be like contradicting (зөрчилдөх)themselves or someone else, like if I said, "that shirt is nice, although I don't like the ruffles." I like to use these words in writing to make my pieces flow well. Sentence fluency is improved with more 'wordy' words like these.

  • Although is a subordinate conjunction, whereas however is a conjunctive adverb.
    • However is more formal than although.
    • Both although and however connect two sentences that do not go well with each other.
    • A more formal and stiff sentence gets created with the use of however and the sentence becomes heavily dependent upon the clause that follows however.
    • Although relates with the phrase in spite of the fact, and one can use simply ‘though’ in its place in all situations.
    • Order of ideas when using although is insignificant, whereas it becomes significant in the case of however.
