difference between strange and weird

  • "Strange" refers to that which is out of the ordinary. It implies that the thing or its cause is unknown or unexplained; it is unfamiliar and unusual (e.g., a strange expression; traveled through strange lands).

"Weird" refers to that which is mysterious and apparently outside natural law. It is suggestive of the fateful intervention of supernatural influences in human affairs (e.g., the weird adventures of a group lost in the jungle; a weird and sinister laugh).

  • strange …. SURPRISING , UNFAMILAR .... it is a strange thing for me
weird … BIZZIARE, UNUSUAL ... i am feeling weird.

  • Strange is the normal word for anything out of the ordinary or foreign (It comes from the French word étranger which means a stranger or foreigner).
Weird however is quite a lot stronger and means non-human behaviour or alien and is commonly used in an exaggerated(хэтрүүлсэн) way.
Examples : That's really weird! He just appeared and disappeared.
He's a little bit strange at first until you get to know him.
He behaved really weirdly - so out of character!
That seems strange to me. I thought the answer was 21.
That film is weird and has the strangest characters in it. -
like your example - strangest means very/most strange and therefore weird!!

  • Try calling him "an odd one." The difference between weird and strange is not large and is a bit difficult to describe, really. Weird inspires the creeps and strange seems off (out of the ordinary a bit). But they both can mean both of those things...so the line is blurred and practically non existent.

However, if you had to choose between those two words, I would use "strange." Weird is a tiny bit harsher.

  • I think the difference is minimal, but the word "strange" suggests "unknown (of before)", whereas the word "weird" suggests "odd" or deviating from the norm.

I think that many people (including myself) don't give it much thought and use both terms interchangeably. :-)
